Taco Bell's Box That Rocks is.... GONE!

Taco Bell's box that rocks (thank you Charles Barkley) has once again been removed from the menu, replaced by the Fiesta Platters (I'll review those next week). The box DOES rock, and I'm confident we'll see it's return soon with a 5-Layer Burrito inside.

Taco Bell has a three step process with their promotional items:
  1. Release a delicious new item for a very low price (the Valcano Taco, for instance).
  2. Discontinue the item after it has gained popularity.
  3. Re-release the item 8-12 weeks later as part of a Box that Rocks (the Volcano BOX!)
They're only getting $0.89 for the burrito NOW, but when they re-release it in a BOX, those of us who love it (and were sad to see it go) will rush out to pay $5-$6 dollars to feast on it once again. Absolutely brilliant, in my opinion.

So fear not, those of you who like myself are sad to see the Taco Bell Box leave us! It will be back, just as big, just as cheap, and just as tasty!

5-Layer Burrito for $0.89

This has been on the menu for a few months now, and is the best value currently available. It is an awesome example of how Taco Bell continues to use a few ingredients to make new food items that get people in the door.

The Good:
Everything. A warm tortilla, then delicious gooey cheese, then ANOTHER warm tortilla. That's enough right there, but then you hit the meat, beans, and sour cream. For some reason the sour cream seems to end up at one end of the burrito, but if you douse the other end in fire sauce you get sweet relief just as you finish. The item is a monster in size-to-price as well, beating out even the famed 1/2 lb cheesy bean and rice burrito.

The Bad:
Do I have to say something bad? Okay... when you finish this torpedo of high value deliciousness you'll wonder why you ever paid 7 bucks for Chipotle. (yeah, the Chipotle tastes better, but 700% better? I think not).

The Verdict:
Best item on the menu today. Order one. Now. Seriously, go get one.

Pacific Shrimp Tacos

Hi friends,

I've been leery of the new shrimp tacos since they came out for a couple of reasons:
  1. Taco Bell is a VALUE restaurant - this is a $3.00 taco. Doesn't seem to mesh.
  2. Most of their menu items are fairly idiot proof. Shrimp are easier to screw up and harder to keep consistent.
This being said if I'm going to call myself a Taco Bell aficionado I need to try it all, so here is the review:

Good:
You don't get a lot of fishy flavor on the shrimp and they weren't rubbery like I was expecting. They had a special sauce on the taco that was kind of like a tangy ranch that reminded me of the zesty nacho sauce they used to have. Also it seemed bigger than their regular tacos, it took longer to eat and felt more substantial. It was hot and had cheese and lettuce and was altogether a good taco experience.

Bad:
It was just GOOD. For $3.00 it should have been GREAT. The quality of Taco Bell really comes out when you compare your experience to how much you paid for it. That ratio is skewed in this item.

Verdict:
Glad I tried it, nothing wrong with the item, but I won't be having it again.
